Big Almaty Lake, which is of landslide-tectonic origin, located at a height of 2511 meters above sea level, was formed about two thousand years ago as a result of a powerful earthquake.

The depth of the lake is 35 meters and the water temperature throughout the year does not exceed 12 °C. Other lake which was also formed as a result of the landslide is Lake Issyk. Many people know that after a heavy debris flow in 1963 the Lake was virtually washed away and ceased to exist, but after the construction of a dam in the late 80-s of the last century, the Lake restored nearly 2/3 of its volume, as well as its water surface which showed trend to grow.
