The Turgen branch of the Ile Alatau State National Nature Park was founded in 1996, based on the forests of the former Alma-Ata Nature Reserve. The total area of the branch amounts to 74594 hectares, and it is divided into three forestry stations:

the Yssyk forestry, total area makes 10318 hectares, located in the Yssyk gorge; the Malovodenskoye forestry, total area makes 18540 hectares, is covering some 10 gorges; and the Turgen forestry, total area amounts to 45736 hectares, located in the Turgen gorge.
