The history of the Ile-Alatau State National Nature Park began in 1931, when the Almaty State Nature Reserve was established in the Zailiyskiy Alatau.

Initially, it occupied 15 thousand hectares in the Malaya Almatinka river valley. In 1935, after an increase of the covered area up to 40 thousand hectares, and later up to 856,7 thousand hectares, it became known as Alma- Ata State Nature Reserve, already covering the whole ridge of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. Regular research of the flora, typology of forests, birds and mammals have been

conducted in this area.

The initiators of the Ile-Alatau National Park were the famous Kazakhstani scientists - botanists, zo-ologists and soil scientists, including members of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR Bykov B.A., Gvozdev E.V. and Baytulin I.O.

They were well aware of the need to preserve the unique forest ecosystems with domination of relict Schrenk spruce and «Redbook» hardwoods – Malus sieversii and wild apricot. The first priority under the constantly growing influx of the tourists and visitors was given to the preservation of all natural complexes with all elements of biodiversity, as well as glaciers, lakes and mountain rivers that provide water for Almaty and many other settlements. The first scientific justification of the organization of the Zailiyskiy (as it was called initially) national park under request of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR as of January 3, 1985 was developed in accordance with the program of the Academy of Sciences «The development of nature reserves in Kazakhstan». The employees of various academic institutions were involved in this work: zoologists (Bekenov A.B., Brushko Z.K., Kovshar A.F.), botanists (Roldugin I.I., Arystangaliev S.A.), soil scientists (Sokolov A.A., Evstifeev Yu.G., Alimbaev A.K.) and geographers (Seversky I.V., Sosedov I.S. and others). Scientific supervisors were academicians Gvozdev E.V. and Bykov B.A.

In 1987, the department of the biosphere and environment problems of the Kazakhstani Committee within the UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program under the Academy of Sciences of Kazakh SSR within the framework of the «Development of the nature reserves in Kazakhstan» program prepared the scientific justification for the «Master Plan for the development and allocation of objects of natural-reserved fund of the Kazakh SSR till 2005.» The document proposed the creation of the Zailiyskiy State National Nature Park on the territory of 280.0 thousand hectares.

Later, in 1989, according to the «Master Plan for the development and allocation of objects of natural-reserved fund of the Kazakh SSR till 2005» the creation of the Zailiyskiy State National Nature Park was planned to do in 1995 on the territory of 200.0 thousand hectares. In 1990, under the supervision of Eydinov Yu.I., workshop #4 of the SGDI «Kazgiprograd» developed a feasibility study for the organization of the park. In 1995, the Environmental Research Center «ENVIRS» during the process of preparation of the «Plan for the development and allocation of objects of natural-reserved fund of the Almaty Region» under the supervision of Academician Baytulin I.O. and Professor Rachkovskaya E.I. developed a scientific justification for creating the Zailiyskiy National Park on the territory of 280.0 thousand hectares on the basis of the Zailiyskiy Forestry Production Association. The first Director General of the Ile-Alatau National Park was Tatarkin V.N., later – Myrzabekov J.M., Begembetov A.A., and since 2008 – Aynabekov M.S. Currently, the following scientific employees are working in the park: Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences Ivaschenko A.A. and Candidate of Biological Sciences Turehanova R.M.
